Inhumane Meat Recalled
3-3-2008 - No doubt you know about the recent wide-spread beef recall. The Humane Society of the United States caught the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company slaughtering and processing cows that could not stand on their own four feet for meat products for human consumption. The reason this condition is a red flag is that is may be an indicator for Mad Cow disease. Apparently there are no reports of anyone with Mad Cow disease so you may be at ease this time. The challenge of this recall is that a lot of this meat was used in processed packaged foods, including frozen entrees. It has been very difficult to track.
The American Meat Institute recently testified before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration. They said this was not an industry wide problem.
Family Food Experts Response: Don’t take any chances. Buy only organic or free-range meats that have not been injected with hormones or feed foods containing pesticides and other unwanted chemicals. Buy from brands that care about raising healthy cows for healthy beef products. Now you can find good sources of beef in almost all supermarkets as well as in natural foods stores.
